PlayBuild Uni, New Orleans, LA

Playbuild NOLAPlayBuild NOLA is a start-up initiative working to transform underutilized outdoor urban spaces in New Orleans into exciting, kid-friendly environments for play and learning. To do this, they will launch their own Uni, add a kit of Imagination Playground blocks, and combine these elements with a robust, staff-led program focused on design education with the goal of stimulating “curiosity, enthusiasm, and an interest in exploring careers in the design disciplines” among underserved youth.

To help them get started, we’ve loaned them four Uni cubes—which they’ve filled with books—and a Uni bench. The PlayBuild NOLA team is now busy taking this little “Uni” around New Orleans along with a borrowed kit of IP blocks, to demonstrate their idea and premiere their programming. They’ve already popped up twice at the OCH Art Market, and once at the the Ashé Cultural Arts Center in Central City in February. Their target launch is in late Spring 2013. We're getting a "new" name... Street Lab.

The Uni Project is the work of Street Lab, a nonprofit launched in 2006 in Boston, where we created community-oriented programs for public space. In 2011, we migrated Street Lab to New York City and launched the Uni Project. The Uni began as a single, portable reading room and has since grown into a city-wide initiative offering more than 600 days of pop-up programming in 150+ public spaces across the city. In 2019, we are re-introducing our original name Street Lab to tie all this work together going forward, with much more to come.

For now, details about our programs are available here on the Uni Project web site. Soon, that content will move to www.streetlab.org. Thanks for sticking with us!
