jennings39_200In July and August 2014, we deployed the Uni reading room to a new play street run by Caldwell Programs on Jennings Street near Prospect Ave in the Morrisania neighborhood of the Bronx. Learn more about our ongoing effort at play streets. Our participation was made possible by a generous grant from Shippy Foundation and additional support from Target. Thanks to Uni Librarian and site manager Rasheed Lucas and play street founder Lonnie Hardy! Photos are from July 29, 30, 31, and August 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 12, 14, 15.

Our artist in residence at the Uni, Tiffany Lin.

We started by asking Tiffany to document the Uni in sketches. She ended up doing much more: talking to kids about her work and letting them draw on their own.

Tiffany’s presence (and some extra supplies we provided) started a trend on the street. Drawing.

On the final day, DJ Cranberry was invited to the play street. He gave a shout out to the library on the mic.

Sam’s arrival with the truck indicated the end of our Jennings St Play Street run.

We brought cartons of extra books which we donated to Caldwell Programs, the youth development organization that ran the play street. The friends we made this summer will have some books to read until we return next year!

Thanks Jennings Street for a great summer. See you next year!
